According to an article dated Oct 15, 2020, Water Education Colorado reported a growing interest in aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) as part of the Colorado Water Plan. Understanding what impacts contamination of the groundwater in the state is important to the states water plan. The most common man-made contaminants in the state are nitrate, fluoride, selenium, iron, manganese, radium, and uranium. Many of these groundwater contaminations are a result of human activities that cause chemicals or waste.
The most common sources of these man-made contaminants in the front range are:
Septic systems – including leach fields
Spills or leakage from chemical storage tanks or ponds
Leakage from sewage pipelines
Waste from active or abandoned mining facilities
Waste migration from ground surface to the groundwater through poorly constructed wells
The use of chlorine, chloramine, and chlorine dioxide to disinfect municipal tap water has led to growing concerns about the potential harmful side effects of these disinfection chemicals. According to information from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the use of chlorine and chloramine can lead to the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) such as chlorite, trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), which have been linked to various health risks, including an increased risk of cancer and reproductive issues. In Colorado, 78 communities reported chlorite levels above EWG health guidelines, which can pose long-term health risks to residents (EWG Water Quality Report).
